Placing Sabbath Moments in Your Day

Placing Sabbath Moments in Your Day

The first time the Bible mentions a Sabbath, or seventh-day rest, God is the one partaking in it. Now don’t misunderstand this to mean that God had depleted His energy and needed some R&R time. Rather Scripture tells us our all-powerful Lord used his Sabbath rest to reflect on the accomplishments of his previous efforts—six days of creation—and, then possibly (my thoughts), to consider what was next to be done.

When God later ordained a Sabbath Day rest for mankind, He knew that not only would we benefit from a physical and mental break, but that we could also profit from some time spent in reflection and re-creation (creative planning for the future). Many of us shortchange ourselves, on numerous levels, by not accepting God’s invitation to fully indulge in a Sabbath day of rest—but that’s a subject for another time.

Today I want to share with you a variation of this restorative time which the Lord has tutored me in—Sabbath moments. In the midst of my own frenzied activity, I am prompted to insert sporadic moments/minutes of time where I stop what I am doing to intentionally look back and to look forward.

Everyday life is filled with creation on our part. We “make” our beds, create order in our homes, earn a living, accomplish assorted projects, produce (hopefully) well-balanced meals, and build relationships. When we allow the busyness of our schedules to crowd out Sabbath moments, we can be easily overwhelmed, and lose not only our focus, by our vision as well.

I have found that when I give myself the opportunity to enjoy what I’ve already accomplished in my day, to thank God for that day’s blessings, and to look ahead in a planning, “dreaming” sort of way, I gain great perspective on my current day and how that day fits into God’s plan for my future days. These Sabbath moments have unearthed for me greater satisfaction, richer joy, and increased productivity.

I suggest you grab hold of a few of these Sabbath moments for yourself. I know you will be truly blessed for having done so!
