Bread that’s Alive?

Bread that’s Alive?

Today’s marketplace presents us with so many “bread options,” it’s difficult to decide just what to buy. There are breads which hold little to no nutritional value (ahem, white breads), breads which are a bit better (wheat breads), some which are better still (100% whole wheat or grain), and then there are the nutritional dynamo bread options—breads which are alive!

Living or sprouted grain breads are baked from whole grain kernels which have been allowed to soak in water for a while, prompting them to begin to “come alive,” or to sprout. Sprouts of any kind are premature (baby) plants. They’re nutritionally dense in vitamins and phytonutrients because they’re the precursor of an adult plant—so they must contain most all the growing power a plant needs in its young life to take off into “plant toddlerhood,” if you will.

One of the best-known brands of sprouted grain breads on the market is produced by the company, Food for Life®. Their product, Ezekiel Bread, is made from the recipe found in the passage of the Bible, Ezekiel 4:9, “Take wheat and barley, beans and lentils, millet and spelt; put them in a storage jar and use them to make bread for yourself.” Bread made from this God-scripted recipe has been shown to be nutritionally complete, low in glycemic index, and high in fiber. Could you ask for more?

So, the next time you are building a sandwich* for yourself, or serving up some toast with your eggs, try super-charging your meal with a sprouted grain bread. Your body will thank you later!

*Even whole grain carbs raise your blood sugar levels significantly, so my advice is to use only one slice of bread when making a sandwich. Try eating an open-faced sandwich (with a slice of cheese or lettuce leaf on top), or eat half a sandwich piled high with twice the fillings!
